What are cookies

A cookie is a file created by a website for the purpose of storing information about the user in the system, such as the preferences expressed by the user while browsing the site, or the cookie may contain a record of the pages visited within the site. This information will be used by the site to personalize the display that will be presented to the user on the next visit.
Information on personal identity can also be stored in cookies. Information on personal identity is information that can be used to identify or contact a person, such as the name, email address, home or work address or telephone number. In any case, a website can access only the information provided personally by the user. For example, the site cannot detect the email address, unless the user provides it directly, nor can it access other information present on the user's computer.
Cookies saved on the computer can only be read by the website that created them, the files that contain them have the name composed of the URL of the website that created them.
The cookies generated can be permanent or temporary, a permanent cookie remains stored as a file on the computer even after the browser is closed and can be read by the website that created it the next time the user visits the site. A temporary cookie is stored only for the duration of the current session and is removed from the computer when the session is closed: this closure can be caused by a specific command, by closing the browser or by using a URL other than that of the site that generated the cookie.
Cookies can be first-party and third-party, first-party cookies are those created by the website viewed, or sent to it, and are generally used to store information such as the preferences of the user who is visiting the site. Third-party cookies are cookies created by a website other than the one viewed, or sent to it. Third-party websites generally provide part of the content of the website viewed; cookies of this type are generally used to record the use of a web page by the user for advertising or marketing purposes. Third-party cookies can be permanent or temporary. Some cookies are potentially harmful, as they can allow access to personal information that could be used for ulterior purposes without the user's consent.
